Expositional Preaching
At RBC we seek to understand and apply the Christian Scriptures in life and practice. We value clear preaching of Biblical passages verse by verse - with a goal of being faithful to the intended meaning of the authors as they were led by the Holy Spirit.

Advent Series for Dec. 2025
Sunday Dec. 7 (Dr. John Soden)
- Preaching Passage: To bring Salvation (Luke 2: 25-39)
Why did Christ have to be born?
Week 1: Hope – In the Hebrew Bible, the words most often used for hope—qavah and yakhal—are also translated as “wait.” To hope in God means to wait with patient expectation, trusting that he will fulfill his promises.
-
- Readings Isaiah 8:5-17, Psalm 130:1-8, Matt 1-2
- Preaching Passage: To be the Free Gift from God (Romans 5:12-21)
Week 2: Peace - As Jesus continues his work of bringing real, lasting peace throughout the Earth, we can participate in that work by living as peacemakers.
- Isaiah 9:1-7, Col 1:13-23, Mark 1
- Preaching Passage: To bring Salvation (Luke 2: 25-39)
Week 3: Joy - This kind of joy is about being united with the God who walks with us and trusting that he will one day wipe away every tear. It looks to the future…[and] invites us to experience joy not because everything is perfect but because God is with us and his joy is already breaking into the world.
- Isaiah 51:1-11, 2 Cor 6:1-10, Luke 1
- Preaching Passage: To bring us a King for the Nations (Isaiah 7:14 and 9:2-7)
Week 4: Love - The Advent season leads us to reflect on the future God is bringing, where every interaction will be shaped and compelled by love. Even more, it invites us to live into that coming world right now by loving others the way Jesus does.
- Deut 6:4-8, 1 Cor 1, John 1
- Preaching Passage: The birth of the Messiah (Luke 2: 1-20)
